Periodontal Treatment

More commonly called gum disease, periodontal disease infects the gums around the teeth and is a major cause of tooth loss for adults. Most people won’t realise they’re suffering from gum disease because the early stages are usually pain free – all the more reason to make sure you receive regular check-ups.

A build-up of plaque on the teeth creates small pockets or gaps between the gum and tooth, leading to one of two stages:

Gingivitis (red, swollen or bleeding gums), which can be easily treated by your dentist.

Periodontitis (damage to gums and bone, loosening teeth), which requires immediate treatment that may include removal of the tooth.

Common causes of gum disease:

  • Bad Oral Hygiene
  • Badly fitted bridges
  • Diabetes
  • Old fillings
  • Pregnancy
  • Smoking
  • Some medication
